We had the opportunity to sit down with Jeff Jue, Associate Professor of Church History at Westminster Theological Seminary.  Dr. Jue is an expert on the eschatological views of the Westminster Divines and his research is a very stimulating subject.  The answer to the question “What were the views of the divines?” may surprise you.

Kline’s “Covenant of the 70th week” is available online. http://www.covopc.org/Kline/Covenant_70th_Week.html .

  2. Vatche Aghishian says:

Thank your for the informative discussion. I have some questions about the Westminster divines and the early reformers. Mr. Jue mentioned that some of the divines held to various chiliastic positions and that the confession itself was not strictly exclusive of such views. Isn’t the confession itself necessarily covenantal? If it is, is a covenantal view of Scripture compatible with premillenarianism of any kind? Thank you for any help you can offer.

  3. Camden Bucey says:

    Vatche,

Many covenant theologians hold to a premillennial eschatology. In fact the non-dispensational version of premillennialism is sometimes called “covenant” premillennialism (more often “historic” premillennialism).

I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naïve. (Romans 16:17-18)
