If it was that simply then why do different cultures/time periods interpret Scripture differently? The role of women and slavery are simply two easy issues to point to on the issue of interpretation. For your view to go through, one would have to say that people didnt attempt to interpret Scripture with Scripture until very very recently.

I do not think the interpretation of Scripture runs into the same issues. We can always check our interpretations of Scripture against Scripture’s interpretation of itself. Because our intuitions are immediate, we do not have this kind of check built-in. I believe it is fair to say that by appealing to their intuitions, philosophers run into stale mates in a way biblical scholars do not by appealing to texts.
