I wanted to contribute what little I could and direct you guys to Anscombe’s “Mr. Truman’s Degree,” for a (relatively) contemporary analysis of the difficulties consequentialist thinking can occasion. It is a particularly useful text, and one I use in my introductory courses, because her example is controversial, one that most westerners think justifiable, namely the twin nuclear bombings of Japan at the close of WWII.
