Understanding our union with Christ is critical because it is the basis to all Christ’s benefits to us. For example, I hear so much Reformed preaching on the cross that at best assumes the resurrection but never mentions it. I’ve wondered if it is just easier for us to believe in Christ’s death than in his resurrection. Do we believe the resurrection is real, or is it just a nice theory? Certainly the cross must be preached but the death of Christ is of no value apart from the resurrection and we have all the benefits of both in union with Christ. Christ is the first fruits of our resurrection such that we can say in a way our resurrection is a continuation of his resurrection. Because Christ is seated at the right hand of the majesty on high and prays for us, we can be confident that our prayers are effective and that he helps us in our weakness. I hear so often that I need to go to the cross, which is good, but I also need to hear explicity that I serve a risen Lord. Gaffin’s Resurrection and Redemption is good on union and he also has an excellent *.mp3 series available on line for a more general audience. I was listenting to Gaffin’s presentation on the way into work this morning and you can tell it’s got me thinking. 😉

I also appreciate Murray’s view of definitive sanctification. One I know who doesn’t is Scott Clark from WSC.
