Volume 1 is not that long, so it can be read pretty quickly; it is the best attempt at developing a biblical theology of preaching that I’ve found. Volume 2 explains so much about Christian preaching throughout the centuries that I think, in many ways, it is the most helpful volume. After that, I would follow Cassidy’s advice and use the rest as referrence or study whatever period you’re really interested in. I know that most of our guys will be tempted to read Volume 4 first, but I think that’s a big mistake. Volume 4 can hardly be understood without first reading Volume 2 (and, for that matter, Volume 1).

So, if you are studying Reformation worship and preaching, read vol 4. Of course, a marathon through the series would also – I am sure – will yield great rewards.
