I’ve always noticed that Twombly works are better if it is many of them taking up a whole space. If it is one of them by itself it does lack some context, but in the museum with many of them together, walking through the rooms had a sense of narrative to it. The technical aspect may appear childish, but the real art is in the selection process and arrangement. There was a story present and I could identify the creation out of nothing, the fall, the redemption, and restoration (the room of green).

My point is that, while things that are created (art) always have an ugly element of sin tainting them, they also always reflect the creative nature of God and some aspect of His ultimate story of history. Much art takes a bit of exploration to find where this reflection is. (I might add that in a similar way Scripture and Theology also take a bit of exploration to find how they are about God.)

They really engaged with this podcast and have a more positive perspective on what they are doing at school. Thanks!

Hi Matt,

Thanks very much for your comments and your appreciation! I do hope we have opportunities to continue this kind of work in the future. I’m so curious to hear your thoughts in greater detail, esp. since you say that “as a Reformed artist” you disagree about some things. Just what is or can be a Reformed perspective on such things?? That’s the question I suppose.

Thanks again, best wishes

as a reformed artist, i don’t agree with much of what these two said, but that doesn’t bother me so much – the conversation is happening! this is the podcast i look forward to more than any other right now, because it’s making genuine advancements now at filling the huge void in reformed Christian discussion on art.

thanks for shifting away from reviewing theology books 🙂

and don’t let those artists get away with so much! they’re artistic, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be held to the same Christian principles as doctors and plumbers!
