This biography is a fine introduction to the life and work of Calvin. Not the least of its merits is that it is eminently readable, a quality that is well preserved in this translation by O. R. Johnson. It is the portrait of a victor who was himself mastered by God, a testimony to the indomitable courage of one who fashioned out of continual self-denial his triumph over physical weakness and inveterate fores.
