In this volume Dr. Stonehouse is concerned to discover by careful exegesis of key passages in Luke’s writings the exact nature of the testimony of this evangelist to Jesus Christ. The book is not intended as a commentary on the whole Gospel. Passages have been selected for study in which Luke’s portrait of our Lord seems to contain something distinctive. In this way the author has been able to give a more thorough and detailed treatment to many of the questions concerning the Gospel which have come to be regarded as important in the modern critical debate.
The Witness of Luke to Christ is a sequel to the author’s previous study, The Witness of Matthew and Mark to Christ. It contains in expanded form, Dr. Stonehouse’s lectures delivered at the Free Church of Edinburgh and Sheffield University in 1949. As general editor of the New International Commentary on the New Testament, Dr. Stonehouse’s new volume will be read and studied with great interest on both sides of the Atlantic. The Tyndale Press of London is publishing this volume simultaneously with the Eerdmans edition.
